GIM Knots for Survival

2 Attachment(s)
In the Abseiling Thread it soon became obvious just how essential rope and tying knots is for basic Survival Preps:

During the Winter when stuck indoors you can practice using any rope found around the house.

:wavey: Maddie provided that link to the animated knot tying website

The trucker's hitch is a knot no self-respecting sailor would use. When you put a heavy strain on it, it will jamb. Better to use the bellyband knot. It is in the same family as the bowline and will not jamb under strain.

It's actually ok for the weight of an average person, I have used it while abseiling, it is quick to do. For other purposes, probably not so.

You can (and I have) rappel on a timber hitch. No knot at all.

Seriously, even if you're pretty sure you remembered what the rabbit did after he came out of the hole and went around the tree, wrapping your rope around the tree a few times before tying your knot takes the tension/load completely off the knot so it's easy to untie after the rope has been loaded. It's also a good safety backup for the knot and healthier for the tree. Unless it's a really short drop, I always wrap the rope around the tree a couple of times before tying a knot.
